Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)
Why Appliance Safety Test?
A large proportion of fires and a quarter of all serious electrical accidents involve portable electrical appliances. Since 1974 the Health and Safety at Work Act (HASAWA) has stated the need to maintain equipment so as to prevent danger. The HASAWA regulations have largely been reinforced by the Electricity at Work Act 1989, with the legal responsibility on the shoulders of the employer to take adequate steps to protect the users of those appliances from both electrical shock and fire hazards.
To meet the requirements of these regulations it is necessary to implement a programme of planned inspection and testing of portable appliances.
